    I.   COURSE INFORMATION

            Type                                                                This course fulfills the first year of the two-year physical education graduation requirement.  It may be taken again as an elective to fulfill the second year requirement.

Recommendation for Enrollment                   Required for all 9th grade students

 

 

     II.   BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE

 

The focus of study is to develop an understanding and appreciation for improving health through physical fitness.  Special emphasis will be placed on the development of movement skills and fitness.  This one year (10 units) non co-ed physical education course is designed to address and expand upon movement skills through a variety of activities.  Special emphasis will be placed on movement knowledge, self-image, and personal and social development.  The focus of study is to develop a personalized plan for lifetime fitness by selecting activities that contribute to the achievement of personal fitness goals.  These activities will include individual, dual and team sports.

 

III.   COURSE OBJECTIVES

 

This course is designed to help students improve in the following ways:

 

A.    To develop efficient and effective movement skills and to understand the basic fundamentals of movement.

B.     To develop and understanding and appreciation for physical fitness and to learn to set goals for improving health through physical fitness

C.     To develop and awareness and understanding of the relationship between physical education and personal and social development

D.    To develop interest and proficiency in activities that lead to achieving personal goals for lifetime fitness.

 

 IV.   STUDENT OUTCOMES

 

Students will be expected to show competency in the following areas:

 

A.  Knowledge

1.      Know the rules and game strategies of selected individual, dual and teams sports and activities

2.      Understand the proper techniques necessary for participation in selected individual, dual and team sports and activities

3.      Comprehend the value of physical education and how it contributes to a healthy lifestyle

4.      Understand and appreciate the basic fundamentals of movement

 

B.  Fitness and Movement Skills

1.   Acquire the skills needed to select appropriate activities to     

      develop and maintain a high level of physical fitness

2.   Attain the highest possible degree of physical fitness

3.   Demonstrate efficient and effective movement skills

      appropriate to selected activities 

4.   Develop a wide variety of movement skills and exercises to  

      enhance total fitness

 

C.  Personal and Social Development

1.      Develop and maintain a positive self-image by achieving 

self-confidence and self-realization through physical  

activity

2.      Set personal goals for improving health through physical  

      fitness

3.      Build personal relationships, learn teamwork and develop

 strategies for resolving conflicts within a group

4.   Demonstrate leadership as well as fellowship

5.      Identify preferences for types of physical activities which can be pursued throughout life for good physical health

 

   V.   ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES

 

Students will be assessed in four different areas which, when combined, will

Total 100%.

 

                A.   Knowledge (Cognitive) - 20%

1.   Written Examinations (Quarter Exam and Semester Final)

a.       Knowledge of rules and regulations

b.      Learned strategies

c.       Knowledge of the anatomical and physiological aspects of the body.

 

         B.  Personal and Social Responsibility - 20%

1.   Proper Physical Education Attire

2.   Daily Participation and Effort

3.   Cooperation

4.   Respect

5.   Responsibility

6.   Appropriate social behavior and interaction

7.   Abiding by class and school rules

        

C.  Movement Skills  (Activity Units) - 40%

1.   Skill tests

2.   Cross training activities

3.   Knowledge and application of a variety of movement skills

4.   There are 2 activity units each quarter

                        D.  Personal Fitness – 20%

1.   Personal fitness program

2.   Formal fitness assessments

3.   Cardiovascular goals and assessments

 

VI.   COMPILATION OF GRADE – CUMMULATIVE POINTS

 

The total possible for the semester is 1,000 points. The semester is divided into 2 quarters.  Each quarter, the student has an opportunity to earn a total of 500 points.  The quarter will include:

 

A.  Knowledge (Cognitive) – 20% (100 points)

B.  Personal and Social Responsibility – 20% (100 points)

                        C.  Movement Skills (Activity Units) – 40%  (200 points)

                        D.  Personal Fitness – 20% (100 points)

                                    1. Physical Fitness Testing – 50 points

Each of the five categories has a possible point value of 10.

Fitness Categories include:

a. Sit-ups

b. Push-ups

c. Shuttle run (300 yard)

d. 1 mile run

e. Pull-ups (boys)   Flexed arm-hang (girls)

                                    2. One-Mile Run – 50 points

The student will be expected to complete (5) one-mile runs. Each one-mile run has a total point value of 10.

     VIII.    ACADEMIC ETHICS AND BEHAVIOR

I.                   COLLABORATION PERIOD

                 

This is a period in which students can meet with their teachers without the interference of after school activities.  This period will be used to make up physical fitness or written tests.  If a student is assigned to attend a collaboration period, but does not report to their required collaboration, he/she  will be referred to the Dean’s Office for disciplinary action.
