II. DEPARTMENT PROFILE

PHILOSOPHY OF THE DEPARTMENT
Physical Education offers experiences that lead to the development of personal goals for achieving lifetime fitness. It has as its aim the building of sound bodies, positive attitudes toward fitness and good standards of social behavior. It creates opportunities to build strong character and leadership as well as fellowship and cooperative teamwork. The program emphasizes the development of various movement skills through a variety of physical activities. Physical Education promotes improving health through lifetime fitness.

1. To develop efficient and
effective movement skills and to understand the basic fundamentals of movement.
2. To develop an understanding
and appreciation for physical fitness and to learn to set goals for improving
health through physical fitness.

IV. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Course Title: PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9-11
(Core requirement for all freshman)
(Elective grades 10 and 11)
Course Description: The
focus of study is to develop an understanding and appreciation for improving
health through physical fitness. Special
emphasis will be placed on the development of movement skills and fitness. This one year (10 units) non co-ed
physical education course is designed to address and expand upon movement
skills through a variety of activities.
Special emphasis will be placed on movement knowledge, self-image, and
personal and social development. The
focus of study is to develop a personalized plan for lifetime fitness by
selecting activities that contribute to the achievement of personal fitness
goals. These activities will include
individual, dual and team sports. THIS
COURSE FULFILLS THE FIRST YEAR OF THE TWO-YEAR PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADUATION
REQUIREMENT. MAY BE TAKEN AGAIN AS AN
ELECTIVE TO FULFILL THE SECOND YEAR REQUIREMENT.

Course Title:
HEALTH EDUCATION - Required
Course Description: This one semester (5 units) course is designed to teach wellness skills. It offers the student rich opportunities for analyzing their behaviors and learning new ways to create healthy lifestyles. The focus of study will include nutrition and weight management for total fitness, HIV and AIDS prevention strategies with a stress on abstinence, substance abuse prevention and treatment and safety and first aid. The classroom setting will be an open forum style with the importance of group discussions to help encourage students to ask questions.

Course Title: RHYTHMIC MOVEMENT/DANCE I (P)
(10-12) -Elective
Course Description: Dance I is a one-semester preparatory course which is designed to introduce and expose students to various dance forms including, but not limited to, Ballet, Jazz, and Modern also with a study of dance history. The class will develop basic technique as well as acquaint the student with proper theory of dance movement. Completion of this course will allow students to receive P.E. credit towards graduation.

Course Title: STRONG BODY (10-12) - Elective
Course Description: This one semester (5 units) physical
education course is designed for students who are interested in improving their
level of fitness through weight training and a variety of cross training
activities. The focus of study is to
develop a personalized fitness plan for lifetime fitness. Special emphasis will be placed on weight
training, fitness and analysis of movement.
THIS COURSE FULFILLS ONE SEMESTER OF THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
GRADUATION REQUIREMENT.

Course Title: ATHLETIC PHYSICAL CONDITIONING
(10-12) Elective
Course Description: This one year (10 units) course is offered only during first period . It is designed as a high intensity weight conditioning program offered primarily for student athletes who are involved in an interscholastic sports team. Special emphasis will be placed on body building and toning, strength training, endurance and cardiovascular conditioning which will benefit athletic performance. Admittance is by recommendation of the instructor. This course DOES NOT FULFILL any part of the physical education graduation requirement

Health Education 1 semester 5 units
*All freshmen are required to take Physical Education 9-11.
VI. PHYSICAL EDUCATION ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES
Students will be assessed in four different areas. The total of these four areas will add up to 100%. Content and assessment is as follows:

VIII. DEPARTMENT POLICIES - EXPECTATIONS FOR PARTICIPATION
· Uniform for Students
1.All students enrolled in Physical Education are required to wear the regulation Physical Education uniform which is to be purchased from the Garces Bookstore.
2. White gym socks and shoes are to be worn in their activity class.
3. The uniform should be visually marked on the hem of the left leg. Markings should include first initial and full last name.
4. Sweatshirts and sweatpants may be worn on cold days.
5. Students must wear their own uniform and should not loan their uniform to anyone else at any time for any reason.
6. All clothing must be taken home once a week for washing.
· SHOWER AND TOWELS
1. The school does not provide towels. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the student to bring their own towel.
2. Students are encouraged to take a shower for hygienic reasons.
3. No glass containers are allowed in the locker area.
· EXCUSES
1. MEDICAL: Students will be excused from dressing for P.E. if they have a written explanation from their family doctor. Medical excuses are to be given to your instructor before class begins.
2. HOME: Students will be excused from participation in P.E. if they have a written explanation from their parent/guardian. The length of time the excuse covers may not exceed three days and if it does, the instructor will call the parents and ask for an explanation concerning the student’s excuse.
· LOCKS AND LOCKERS
1. Combination locks must be purchased by the student from the Garces bookstore.
2. The lock combination must be given to the instructor before a P.E. or weight training locker is issued.
3. Lockers should be locked at all times. Only during the activity class are students allowed to use the long lockers. At all other times they are to use the small locker which was issued to them.
4. The combination to a student’s locker should not be given to anyone.
· ADDITIONAL RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. The gym hours are from 7:40 until 3:15 daily, excluding lunch period. The gym will be closed at any other time unless after school activities are taking place.
2. Students are not allowed into the gym office without the instructor’s permission.
3. The telephone in the P.E. office is for the instructor’s use and may be used by a student only with the instructor’s permission.
4. No gum is allowed in the locker room.
5. No student is to be in the gym or weight training room without the direct supervision of the instructor or coach.
6. Students are not to run in the shower or locker area.
7. Profanity will not be tolerated at any time.
8. Insubordination will not be tolerated at any time.
9. Students are responsible for locking up their own valuables.
10. The students are to be completely dressed before leaving the locker area.
11. All students must be in the gym building before the official tardy bell rings.
12. All students are to stay away from equipment until they are given permission to use it.
13. Students may not leave the locker room until the passing bell rings.

Type This course fulfills the first year of the two-year physical education graduation requirement. It may be taken again as an elective to fulfill the second year requirement.
Recommendation for Enrollment Required for all 9th grade students
The focus of study is to develop an understanding and appreciation for improving health through physical fitness. Special emphasis will be placed on the development of movement skills and fitness. This one year (10 units) non co-ed physical education course is designed to address and expand upon movement skills through a variety of activities. Special emphasis will be placed on movement knowledge, self-image, and personal and social development. The focus of study is to develop a personalized plan for lifetime fitness by selecting activities that contribute to the achievement of personal fitness goals. These activities will include individual, dual and team sports.
This course is designed to help students improve in the following ways:
A. To develop efficient and effective movement skills and to understand the basic fundamentals of movement.
B. To develop and understanding and appreciation for physical fitness and to learn to set goals for improving health through physical fitness
C. To develop and awareness and understanding of the relationship between physical education and personal and social development
D. To develop interest and proficiency in activities that lead to achieving personal goals for lifetime fitness.
